Christmas Concert Day!

Reading Buddies








Students had a concert rehearsal in the morning and had the first concert at 2:00 pm. Tonight's concert will be at 7:00 pm. Students are to arrive back at school at 6:30 pm to prepare.

Reminders

- Class Christmas party is tomorrow! Please bring snacks and treats for the class to share and remember it must be peanut free. 
- Tomorrow is Spirit Day! Come to school wearing red, green, and white!

Dear SJA Parents and Guardians, 

As you are aware, the re-registration season is upon us and we have recently sent home packages with your child(ren). We value your loyalty and commitment to our school community and would love to continue our partnership by offering priority enrolment for our current SJA families. We kindly ask that you take a moment to review your financial statement and complete the information in the package and make any necessary changes to your place of residence, employment, email changes or any medical information that the administration should be aware of.

Please be aware that in order to secure your child’s enrolment, it is imperative that you submit your re-enrolment package and fees no later than February 12, 2018 at 4:00 pm. After this date, all available grade-level spaces will be open to our families on wait lists who will then have the opportunity to secure any vacant positions.

Starry Night

Today students mainly practiced for the Christmas concert and had rehearsals during the day. During our spare time, we worked on completing the Starry Night art piece, DRA's, and a Christmas fun package prepared for the students including crossword puzzles, word searches, mazes, colour pages, riddles, and a letter to Santa!

Some students were away yesterday, therefore, for those who didn't receive their Secret Santa gift, they got to open it today!

Homework: Please review the song lyrics that were emailed. Students were also given a hard copy yesterday.

Unit 5 Math Test

Language

Learning goal: Students will learn about doubling final consonants (Spelling Lesson 15).

Students were assigned Lesson 15 for homework as we had to practice our song for the concert.

NOTE: There is no spelling test this week! Spelling test 14 signed and corrected for tomorrow. Complete Spelling Lesson 15 for homework.

Math

Students wrote their Unit 5 math test today.

UOI

Learning goal: Students will discuss symbols and festivals in Buddhism.

Students were split into groups of 4: 2 researching symbols and 2 researching festivals of Buddhism. Students used their device to help them and they filled in the information in their charts.

Symbols and Festivals of Buddhism

Language

Students completed their spelling test and OWA post-assessment.

Math

Learning goal: Students will conduct a survey and collect data for Monday's math test.

Students went around the school to different classes from Grades 4- MYP to ask students what their religion is and made a tally chart.

Homework: Math sheet and math test Monday, December 18.

Bar and Line Graphs

Language

Learning goal: Students continued to work on writing their recount on the story of Buddha.

Students completed the introduction paragraph for writing the recount of the story of Buddha. Students continued to work on the body paragraphs noting the key words before starting a new paragraph: First, Second, Third, After, Then, Next.

Math

Learning goal: Students will draw bar and line graphs.

Students looked at examples of data and learned how to turn them into bar and line graphs. Students had to make note that it's important to include a title and labels for the 'x' and 'y' axis. The number intervals on the 'y' axis should also increase in the same pattern. On a graph, students learned that the adding a jagged line in between 0 and the first number shows that we are not showing all the numbers between 0 and the starting number.

Students worked on pg. 167 questions 1a and 2a and pg. 174 questions 1a and 2.

Homework: 2 Math Sheets, complete textbook work if not finished.

Buddhism

Language

Learning goal: Students will learn how to write a recount.

Students watched a video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35F2vgkxRxA) that explains each step of how to write a recount and also examples of action words, past tense verbs, and description. After learning about Buddhism and watching a video of the story of Buddha in UOI, students wrote a recount on the video.

Math

Learning goal: Students will calculate mean and mode of data.

Students looked at examples of calculating the mean and mode from data.

The Mean is a number that represents the centre of a set of numbers.
Example: The number of cubes in each row is 3, 4, 4, 9.
Add the numbers together: 3 + 4 + 4 + 9 = 20
Then divide by the number of rows, 4: 20/4=5

The Mode is the number that occurs most often in the data.

Students worked on pg. 158 questions 1-4 in the textbook.

UOI

Learning goal: Students will learn about Buddhism.

Students watch a video on the story of Buddha (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3gK4VO9roE). Students looked at an information sheet that talks about the founder, how it's different from other religions, who Siddartha Gautama was, where they worship, the sacred text, meditation,  and karma.

Homework: Please bring devices for tomorrow's activity.

The St. Jude's community places a lot of emphasis on giving and conducting acts of charity. In light of the Christmas season which is fast approaching, we are happy to announce that we collaborating with Peel Regional Police for their 'Toys for Tots' charity. We will be conducting a toy drive from December 7th to December 21st. Members of the St. Jude's community may donate new, unwrapped toys, cash or Canadian Tire money to make an underprivileged child's Christmas one to remember. All proceeds will be handed over directly to Peel Regional Police on December 21st. We are also pleased to announce the Toys for Tots charity is the first major project our Student Council will be conducting this academic year. 

Toys can be donated at the front desk by placing them under the Christmas tree. There will be a tracking sheet provided to record the student who donated. Upon collecting the toys, a police officer will allow one lucky student to pie him/her in the face. As such, it is important to record the names of each student to give everyone a chance. Alternatively, toys may be handed to class teachers. To educate our PYP students about the importance of giving, house points will be awarded for each toy donated.

We look forward to your donations, all of which will be greatly appreciated. 
Tis the season for joy, happiness, love, and sharing. Have a Merry Christmas!

How to write a recount

Language

Learning goal: Students will learn how to write a re-count (OWA).

Students were introduced to what a recount is: A recount is a retelling or sequence of events that happened to the writer or speaker.We looked at a student example of a re-count to help students identify the different parts that are important in the writing. They also received a text organizer to practice writing their own recount for tomorrow.

Math

Learning goal: Students will read and interpret data in tables and graphs.

We looked at examples on pg. 156 and 157 in the textbook and students worked on pg. 158 questions 1, 2, and 3.

Homework: Math sheet

UOI

Students continued their research from yesterday and presented their findings to the class of the symbols and festivals related to Judaism.

Van Gogh's 'Starry Night'

Language

Learning goal: Students will learn about dropping the final e (Spelling lesson 14).

Students read the story and TIP for the spelling lesson and we looked at examples from the story. Students wrote their spelling words in their agendas and started to worked on lesson activities.

Homework: Complete lesson 14 activities.

Math

Students wrote their unit 5 pre-assessment test.

UOI

Learning goal: Students will complete Van Gogh's "A Starry Night" art piece.

Students worked on re-creating Van Gogh's "A Starry Night" art piece that relates to Christianity. While we waited for the glue to dry, students were split into 2 groups to research 2 symbols and 2 festivals related to Judaism. Students shared with the class afterwards.

Here is some background information that was shared to the students regarding this art piece:

Religious Interpretation of Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night
But there is more to the meaning of Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night than just insanity and isolation. Perhaps the real reason why the Van Gogh painting is so famous and appreciated today is not due to the negative emotions that may have initially inspired the artwork, but the strong feelings of hope Van Gogh conveys through the bright lights of the stars shining down over the dark landscape at night. In 1888, Van Gogh wrote a personal letter in which he described "a great starlit vault of heaven...one can only call God." With a theologian for an uncle, Van Gogh himself was also religious, even serving as a missionary in his younger days. Many art scholars believe there is a hidden religious meaning to Starry Night. In the painting, the moon and stars in the night sky are surrounded by large halos of light while a church steeple stands out above the smaller, less detailed buildings in the town below. In fact, some art critics find a biblical meaning in the number of stars painted in Starry Night that alludes to specific Bible verse in Genesis.
Then he dreamed still another dream and told it to his brothers, saying, “Look, I have dreamed another dream. And this time, the sun, the moon and the eleven stars bowed down to me.”

Biblical Meaning of Vincent Van Gogh's Most Famous Art: A Genesis Quote?
Why did Van Gogh paint exactly 11 stars? By painting exactly eleven stars in the Starry Night painting, Vincent Van Gogh might have been directly referencing Genesis 37:9, a key verse in the biblical account of Joseph, a "dreamer" and an outcast in the company of his eleven older brothers. It isn't hard to see why Van Gogh might have identified with Joseph in the Bible. In the Bible, Joseph was thrown into a pit, sold into slavery, and underwent years of imprisonment, much like Van Gogh did the last years of his life in the Arles asylum. No matter what Joseph did he could not receive the acceptance or respect of his 11 older brothers. Likewise, despite his best efforts, as an artist Van Gogh failed to receive the recognition of art critics of his day."
