Congratulations to Shane for winning the Knowledgeable award!

Reading Buddies

Language

Learning goal: Students will learn about vowel with "r" for Spelling lesson 8.

Students read the story and the TIP for Spelling lesson 8. We looked at examples of words with vowels "r" from the story. Students wrote their spelling words in their agenda and start to work on lesson 8 activities.

Homework: Spelling lesson 8 due tomorrow. Spelling test signed and mistakes corrected.

Math

Learning goal: Students will learn how to make change with money.

Students learn how to calculate the amount of change required based on the total cost of a product and the amount that was given to the cashier. Students learned to subtract the total cost of the product from the amount of money given by the customer to determine the change needed.

Students worked in the textbook on page 206 questions 1-3. Since we didn't have enough time because of the fire alarm drill students can finish 1-3 for homework and complete 4-5 if there is extra time.

Homework: Pg. 206 questions 1-3 (4-5 if there's extra time)

UOI

UOI

Learning goal: Students will learn about light and sound.

We finished one experiment from yesterday's experiment called "Sounding Out Water", students were required to fill the yogurt container with water. They hit the tuning fork on the edge of their shoe and held the end of it near the water. They had to observe what happened. Did they this a couple of times and then had to listen and observe each time.

Students also worked on their safety poster and title page in class.

Homework:
1) Bring a small plastic container, rubber bands, and a tea towel for next week's experiment on Wednesday.
2) Safety poster is due on Monday if not completed.
3) Title page for Light and Sound due Monday if not completed.

Ms. Hawyward introduced the new set up of the library, the opportunity to visit the library in the future and sign books out and to be able to visit the library during recess! Estimating and Counting Money

Language

Learning goal: Students will read "Anne of Green Gables" Chapter 8.

We reviewed what happened in the book so far and I read chapter 8 to the class. Students completed the comprehension questions in class.

Homework: Study for spelling test tomorrow.

Math

Learning goal: Students will estimate and count money up to $1,000.

Students looked at a collection of money in the textbook on pg. 202. Students learned how to sort money by placing all of the same bills and coins together into their own group. First count the bills from largest to smallest then add up how many coins are in each group. Based on the amounts from bills and coins, the final total is added together. Students practiced how to first estimate the amount of money in front of them, then count for the accurate amount.

Students worked on pg. 203 questions 1, 3, 5, and 8.

Homework: Math practice sheet.

OWA Post-Test

Language

Students completed their OWA post-test today in class.

Math

Learning goal: Students will explore time and distance relationships.

Students learned that speed is a measure of how fast an object is moving. They explored how time and distance is shown in a table and on a graph. For example: Helen's marble travels 50 cm every second. At this speed, it will go: 50 cm (1s), 100 cm (2s), 150 cm (3s), 200 cm (4s). Students learned how to read this in a table and on a graph.

Students completed textbook pg. 199 questions 1, 3, 4, and 5.

Homework: Math practice sheet.

UOI

Learning goal: Students will discuss how the ear works.

Students learned "What is Sound?" through a youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-xKZKxXuu0 and activity sheet discussing the properties of sound.

Students also watched a video on "How the ear works": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMXoHKwWmU8 explaining the different parts and how it functions. We learned how to protect our ear drum and learned how to label the diagram of an ear.

Students worked on creating a safety poster on how we can protect our ears and included rules and pictures. Students will have more time to work on it this Friday and it will be due on Monday.

UOI: Light and Sound

Language

Learning goal: Students will complete the final draft of their OWA report writing on snowy owls.

Students wrote their final draft today in class as practice for their OWA post-assessment tomorrow. Students reviewed their work using the writing checklist on the wall to ensure that all requirements were met.

Homework: Complete OWA final draft if not completed in class.

Math- Unit 6: Measurement

Learning goal: Students will tell time to the nearest second.

Students learned how to write the date and time in SI notation (Standard International). For example, the date October 24, 2017 would be written as 2017 10 24. The date written in words would be: October twenty fourth two thousand seventeen. For time, if the clocks shows 4 hours 32 minutes 10 seconds, SI notation would be: 4: 32: 10.

Time to the nearest minute: 1-30 (minute stays the same); 31-60 (minute goes up)
For example: 11:30:04 (11:30) and 11:30:52 (11:31)

Students worked on textbook pg. 195 questions 1-4.

Homework: Math practice sheet

UOI: Light and Sound

Learning goal: Students will be introduced to light and sound.

We created a KWL chart for light and sound as students shared their knowledge and curiosities about the topic. Students looked at a picture titled "Sounds Are All Around" and answered questions to the following scenario: "Imagine your class is at a basketball game. The game is in full swing and the fans are cheering. In the middle of all this excitement, your class is doing a science investigation. Your task is to observe and record all the sounds you can hear at the game. Take a look at this picture. How many sounds would you hear in this scene?"

After going through this activity, students started to create a title page for the new unit.
