Students completed the test for Spelling Lesson 1. There was an introduction into "Paraphrasing" and the importance of paraphrasing in students' written work.

Math

Math Review Day

Learning goal: Students will use prior knowledge to complete "Show What You Know" in the textbook.

Students completed page 22 questions 1-3 in the textbook. If students didn't finish, it was assigned for homework.

Homework: Math review sheet due Monday. We will be taking up the answers in class to prepare for the test on Tuesday, Sept 19th.

Provinces/Territories/Capitals Review

Learning goal: Students will review the provinces, territories, and capitals of Canada through a bingo review game.

Students played a bingo review game to help them prepare for their quiz on Wednesday, Sept 20th. Students had to identify the capital of the city on their board when the teacher called out the province or territory.

Homework: A labelled map of Canada including the provinces, territories, capitals, 5 great lakes, and oceans was sent home today. Students are to use this sheet to review and practice on the blank side. Students are also recommended to memorize the acronym (HOMES) and the saying "Sally and Billy Made Our Queen Nervous Playing Near Needles" to help them study!

We continued to read Chapter 2 of Anne of Green Gables and students completed the comprehension questions in their duotang.

Using Patterns to Solve Problems

Learning goal: Students will solve patterns by applying a patterning strategy.

As a class, we looked at the example on pg. 16 "Explore" and completed the question together as a class. Students were assigned pg. 18 questions 2abc.

Bodies of Water and The 5 Great Lakes

Students listened to a song about The 5 Great Lakes to help them remember the names: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfvm4p8tnAQ. I also introduced the acronym "HOMES" to help them familiarize with the names-- H (Huron), O (Ontario), M (Michigan), E (Erie), S (Superior).

Students also labelled the bodies of water: Pacific Ocean, Arctic Ocean, and Atlantic Ocean. They coloured in the rest of their map!

Dear SJA Families,

As part of being an IB school we encourage students to demonstrate ‘International Mindedness’. At St. Jude’s Academy, we value the diversity of cultures and perspectives that exist in our local, national and global communities to enhance student learning.

This year, St. Jude’s Academy will be having our fourth annual International Mindedness Day on Thursday, October 5^th, 2017. This activity will involve JK – Gr. 6 classes and each class will be learning about one country. Students and teachers will inquire into the life and culture of citizens from that country.

Students will be researching many aspects of their country including:

Traditional music and dress

Artwork and dance

Cuisine

Cultural toys, games & sports

Products and exports

Interesting laws/policies

Rules and customs

Parents are welcome to visit on this day and doors will be open from 2:30pm to 3:15pm.

UOI- Territories and Capital Cities

We completed our OWA Pre-Assessment in class today. Students had to write a report on what life would be like without electricity.

Modelling Patterns

Learning goal: Students will model patterns and make predictions.

We explored the examples of different sizes of triangles on page 13 of the textbook. We reviewed what a perimeter is and how to count the perimeter of shapes correctly. Students were also given a multiplication chart up to the 12 times table in their math notebooks. Students are to review the multiplication chart regularly at home as in Grade 5, students will be answering questions related to multiplication.

Territories and Capital Cities

Learning goal: Students will learn where to label the territories and capital cities of Canada.

Students learned about the differences between a province and territory. Canada has a constitution (Constitution Act of 1982)-- which determines what our official languages are and what our individual rights are. The constitution works together with our system of laws to make up rules of the country. It also indicates what provinces are a part of Canada and what the powers of those provinces are. Whereas territories are created by Federal Law (territories have a bit less power than the provinces). The biggest difference is that the provinces get to vote on changes to the constitution, but the territories do not.

The lunch ordering website is now active for the month of October. You may start ordering your child's lunches! Please make sure your child is under the correct grade, as there were many mistakes made for last month's ordering. The website is: http://mydigitalmailroom.com/sja.

The last day to order for October will be Wednesday, September 26th. After this date, our system closes and is unable to open for October ordering. All payments are due on Friday, October 6th. 

Cheque payments will not be accepted. If you choose the cheque option on the ordering site, it will be assumed that the payment is made through FreshBooks and you will be invoiced. 

Another item has been added to our Hot Lunch Program as a Special. This month's special is Shepherd's Pie that will be available every Friday!

Novel Study- Anne of Green Gables

We started our first Novel Study called "Anne of Green Gables". I read out loud Chapter 1 to the students and they worked on the comprehension questions for the chapter.

Math

Creating Number Patterns

Learning goal: Use an input/output machine to create number patterns.

We looked at textbook pg. 9 together as a class and reviewed what an input/output machine is. We explored an input/output machine and completed a table to show the pattern rule for the output numbers. Input/output machines can create a growing and shrinking pattern.

Students worked on pg. 10 questions 1-3 in class.

Homework: Pg. 11 questions 4-5

Students watched a video on the provinces of Canada and began to fill in a map of Canada labelling the provinces.

Learning goal: Analyze number patterns and state the pattern rule

As a class we looked at examples regarding growing, shrinking and repeating patterns using the Explore and Connect page in the textbook from lesson 1.

Students completed page 8 questions 1, 2a-c, 3ab, 4 in class.

Homework: Page 8 questions 5-7.

Language

Spelling Lesson 1

Students started off by writing this week's spelling words into their agenda. Students are required to practice these spelling words over the week for their weekly spelling test on Friday's. If a Friday is a P.D. Day, we usually will have our spelling test on Thursday unless otherwise stated. The weekly spelling words will also be posted on the blog for reference. Please refer to the correct Grade level for your child.

Students worked through lesson 1 during class and is required to complete the rest of lesson 1 for homework tonight.

"Oh Canada"

Learning goal: Students will learn about Canada.

Our first UOI unit of the year was introduced to the students today. Their UOI duotang for the year is a yellow colour. Students will keep all their UOI related work into the duotang. Today students were given time to create a title page and decorate it. Students who brought in postcards will have time to share with the class this week.
