Language

Learning goal: Students will read "Anne of Green Gables" Chapter 12.

We discussed a summary of the previous chapter and I read out loud Chapter 12. Students completed comprehension questions in their duotangs.

Math

Learning goal: Students will be exploring large masses.

Students learned that 1t (tonne)= 1000 kg. We looked at some examples in the book, for example the mass of an 18-wheel truck is about 44t. The mass of a walrus is about 1300 kg. Students had to convert from tonne to kilograms by dividing or multiplying 1000. 

Students worked on textbook page 220 questions 1-3.

Learning goal: Students will learn about how light travels.

Students watched a Magic school bus video called "Gets a Bright Idea"and completed questions about the video.

Students volunteered to recite the poem today and those who did it correctly got 10 house points each!! Awesome work!

Language

Learning goal: Students will learn about consonant digraphs (Spelling lesson 9).

Students were introduced to the lesson on consonant digraphs-- two consonants together that make a completely new sound. We read the story and the TIP for the lesson. We looked at the examples provided in the book. Students then wrote the spelling words in their agendas and started to work on lesson 9 activities.

Homework: Complete lesson 9. Spelling test signed and correct mistakes.

Math

Learning goal: Students will learn how to compare mass milligrams, grams, and kilograms.

Students learned that 1kg= 1000 g and 1g= 1000 mg. We looked at examples of objects that would be measured in milligrams, grams, and kilograms. Students worked on pg. 217 questions 1, 2, and 3.

Learning goal: Students will learn about light.

The new light unit was introduced to the students and they completed activities related to "Light in Our Lives". Students looked at a picture of the inside and outside of a house. They made a list of all the light sources they could find. They had to decide whether they were natural or artificial sources of light. At the end, students filled in the KWL chart for sound for "What They Learned".

Learning goal: Students will read "Anne of Green Gables".

Students completed their spelling test today. I read out loud Chapter 10 of Anne of Green Gables and students answered comprehension questions in their duotang.

Homework: Practice Guy Fawkes Poem for Monday for house points!

Math

Learning goal: Students will review how to calculate volume and convert L to mL.

Students worked on a review package for calculating volume and determining the larger amount of capacity of the two listed in L/mL or whether they are equal.

Learning goal: Students will present the skit they made yesterday in class.

Each group of students had the chance to present their skit to the class based on the story line they came up with. Every student had a different role and were only allowed to use sounds in their presentation.

For homework, students will create a sound art where they have to choose a specific sound and write the word in the middle and create symbols that relate to the word. For example "Boing!" and draw symbols that represent it. Examples are posted below. The whole pictures needs to be in colour.

Learning goal: Students will learn about word choice.

Students worked on grammar sheets related to common nouns (person, place or thing), proper nouns (a specific person, place, or thing; starts with a capital letter), plural nouns (add "s" or "es" to make nouns mean more than one), and abstract nouns (feelings or ideas).

Homework: Study for spelling test tomorrow.

Math

Learning goal: Students will learn how to measure volume.

Students learned that the volume of an object is a measure of the space it takes up. A centimetre cube has a volume of one cubic centimetre. Students looked at example of a rectangular prism and other objects with various number of cubes. Students learned volume= length x width x height.

Learning goal: Students will create a skit only using sound effects.

Sound and Environment

Students worked in groups to create a skit with only sound effects such as changing their pitch and volume. They created a plan and practiced it and will present tomorrow in class.

Library Visit

Our morning started off with visiting the library for half an hour. We had a chance to explore the various books available and students chose to read ones they were interested in. Students are also allowed to sign out library books using sign out sheets provided by Ms. Hayward.

Learning goal: Students will read Anne of Green Gables chapter 9.

I read out loud chapter 9 and students completed comprehension questions in their novel study duotang. Students who had spelling corrections from the homework on Monday also worked on those.

Math

Learning goal: Students will learn how to measure capacity.

Students looked at examples in the textbook to convert L to mL and vice versa. Students worked on textbook pg. 209 questions 2 and 3 together as a class.

Learning goal: Students will learn about sounds and solids.

Students learned that sound can be reflected and absorbed. We worked on experiments in the science textbook and students made their own guitar container. We discussed that the volume of sound depends on our environment. For example, a smooth flat surface such as brick, metal or wood reflects sound as it bounces and come back straight to us, which makes it louder (more sound saves) and sometimes echo-y (depending on how large the room is and how long it takes for the sound to come back). However, in a room with sofa, carpet and curtains, the soft furnishings absorb the sound.

We did a test by making a toy guitar. We did three things and guessed what the sound would be like:

1) Our fingers only
2) The container and elastic bands
3) The container, bands, stuffed with a tea towel.
