Learning goal: Students will learn about Judaism.

We watched a video on parables for Christianity (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9Wpd2pDg2I) and read an information sheet on Judaism and went through the different elements in the religion. We also watched a video about Abraham (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6LlNZo5xLQ) and identified the key points from the video.

The St. Jude's community places a lot of emphasis on giving and conducting acts of charity. In light of the Christmas season which is fast approaching, we are happy to announce that we collaborating with Peel Regional Police for their 'Toys for Tots' charity. We will be conducting a toy drive from December 7th to December 21st. Members of the St. Jude's community may donate new, unwrapped toys, cash or Canadian Tire money to make an underprivileged child's Christmas one to remember. All proceeds will be handed over directly to Peel Regional Police on December 21st. We are also pleased to announce the Toys for Tots charity is the first major project our Student Council will be conducting this academic year. 

Toys can be donated at the front desk by placing them under the Christmas tree. There will be a tracking sheet provided to record the student who donated. Upon collecting the toys, a police officer will allow one lucky student to pie him/her in the face. As such, it is important to record the names of each student to give everyone a chance. Alternatively, toys may be handed to class teachers. To educate our PYP students about the importance of giving, house points will be awarded for each toy donated.

We look forward to your donations, all of which will be greatly appreciated.

Religion: Christianity

Book Fair Preview

Language

Students worked on completing their Term 2 DRA Reading Survey. We also had students share their UOI action at this time.

Homework: Spelling test tomorrow.

Math

We took up the math review package as a class. Students made corrections in their package where necessary. Students should review this package tonight to prepare for their math test tomorrow.

UOI

Learning goal: Students will learn about Christianity.

Students were notified that their summative task would be to create their own religion. Therefore, as we learn about each one over the unit, they need to make note of the commonalities we are learning from each religion and what is important to include when creating their own religion. For Christianity we learned about the founder, who Jesus Christ was, what other names he is known by, who are Christians, why they are called Christians, what do Christians believe, where they worship, what their worship is like, and what the Christian holy book is called.

After learning these facts, students were split into four groups. 2 groups researched symbols and 2 groups researched festivals of Christianity. Students used their devices to help them fill in a chart. Students wrote their information on chart paper and shared with the class.

Adverbs an Adjectives

Language

Learning goals: Students will learn about adverbs and adjectives.

As a class we went over the definition of what adverbs and adjectives are and examples of how to use them in sentences. Students completed worksheet exercises to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding.

Math

Students worked on a math review package to prepare for their test on Friday. We will take up the answers as a class tomorrow.

Homework: Complete math review package if not finished in class.

UOI

We used our UOI period today to continue preparing for the student-led conferences. Students practiced how to present their information to one another.

Secret Santa!

Students will be participating in a class Secret Santa. The budget for the gift will be $10. Please refer to the information sheet that the students filled out for gift ideas. Please remind students not to share who they received for the draw as we want to keep it a surprise for our gift exchange! Happy shopping!

Area of a Rectangle

Language

Learning goal: Students will learn about adding 'ed, er, and -ing to words (Spelling lesson 13).

Students ready the story and the TIP from the lesson activity. We looked at examples in the story and discussed the rules. Students wrote their spelling words in their agenda and will be completing lesson activities for homework.

Homework: Spelling lesson 13 due tomorrow.

For the rest of the period, students continued preparing for their student led-conferences by filling in the package of information that will be presented to parents at the conference.

Math

Learning goal: Students will calculate the area of a rectangle.

Students looked at examples in the textbook on pg. 331 and 332 on how to calculate the area of a rectangle. Students worked on pg. 333 questions 1, 2, and 5 in the textbook.

Area= Length x Width
Area= 12 x 6 = 72
Area= 72 cm squared

UOI

Learning goal: Students will begin our new unit on Religion.

We finished one summative presentation today before moving onto the new unit. Students did a think-pair-share on what they know about religion and created a title page for their duotang.

Students were reminded that we are learning about different religions, not discussing what is right or wrong. Just as if we were learning about different cultures, we need to respect each one and be open to learning about different religions-- whether we may be for or against it.
